Introduction

Our teams are divided into instructional teams and league teams.  Our league teams play in the Nikkei Youth Basketball Association (NYBA) league. The NYBA includes teams from San Francisco, San Mateo, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos, Sunnyvale, and San Jose.  B teams will play in the East Bay Youth Athletic League (EBYAL).

Our instructional groups are co-ed Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade; and 3rd grade boys and 3rd grade girls. The instructional groups typically practice once a week, starting in September and continuing through February. Kindergarten and 1st grade teams will start in October and go through mid-January.

At least one parent is required to attend each practice.  Instructional teams do not participate in league games.  However, starting in January, the instructional teams will typically participate in jamborees sponsored by other organizations.  The jamborees typically involve two games on a Saturday or Sunday.  The instructional season typically ends with our jamboree, which occurs towards the end of February.  Instructional teams will sometimes participate in additional jamborees or tournaments after February, subject to the interest level among parents and the availability of the coach.  The registration fee for instructional basketball covers our jamboree, but does not cover fees for other jamborees, which are an additional expense.

Our league teams are divided into the following groups:

Boys

Girls

The league teams begin practice in mid-September. Teams will usually practice twice a week before the league season and once a week during the season.  Practices are typically on a Friday evening or Saturday (or Sunday, before the season starts). The league season runs from December through February. The season includes 8 games (typically on Sunday afternoons), with four home games and four away games. Teams will often participate in pre-season tournaments, and most teams participate in a post-season tournament in March (e.g., a weekend tournament in Sacramento). Participation in tournaments is not required, and tournament entry fees are not included in the registration fee.

Expectations (IMPORTANT)

If you register, it is expected that you will prioritize Tri-City over other basketball leagues and that you will do your best to have your child attend all practices and games. We have more interest than we have spots available, and we feel that it is in the reasonable best interest of the community to offer spots to kids that are committed to participating in Tri-City.

Please also keep in mind that Tri-City is a volunteer-run organization and parent participation is critical. You will be expected to assume a volunteer position for each of your kids’ teams.

Attendance problems or failure to fulfill volunteer responsibilities may result in the loss of a roster spot for the following season. If you feel that you cannot make the requisite commitment, we can refer you to other programs that may be a better fit so that we can make the roster spot available to another player.

Priority

The following are some of the factors that we consider when determining priority and forming teams:

The basketball commissioners have final authority to accept or reject participants. If there are too many participants, the commissioners will use their best discretion in keeping with the goals of the organization and meeting NYBA requirements in making their player selections.

Confirmation

Acceptance of your registration will be confirmed by the last week of August by e-mail. We expect the first practices for league teams to begin the 2nd  weekend of September. Your coach will notify you as to your first practice.

Reimbursement (for kids that make their high school team)

Under NYBA league rules, any 9th - 12th grade boys or girls that play on a school basketball team are not eligible to play on an NYBA league team.  Because final cuts for school teams typically do not occur until mid to late November, you may not know whether your son or daughter will make the team when you register for Tri-City.  If you register and your son or daughter subsequently makes the school team, we will reimburse you $150 of the registration fee. If you register your son or daughter for Tri-City and he or she does not make the high school team, you can secure a spot on a Tri-City roster (subject to the team meeting league requirements). If you do not register your son or daughter and he or she does not make the high school team, there may not be an available roster spot at that later time on a Tri-City team.
